Drei Generationen, zwei Schweizer Künstlerinnen, ein finnischer Künstler und ein gemeinsames Thema. Die langjährige und kontinuierliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Landschaft charakterisiert das Schaffen von Cristina Fessler (1944-2012), Brigitte Fries (geb. 1955) und Janne Laine (geb. 1970). Im künstlerischen Aneignungsprozess erarbeiten sich die drei Kunstschaffenden in ihrer je unverwechselbaren Art bildnerische Lösungen, die über die Abbildhaftigkeit hinaus führen. Durch formale Reduktion und Relativierung von Standpunkt und Grössenverhältnissen berühren ihre Arbeiten letztlich die Frage nach Anfang und Ende, nach Transzendenz. Für die motivischen Recherchen haben Fessler, Fries und Laine ihre Landschaften gefunden, in die sie immer wieder zurückkehren.
Janne Laine ist in Island unterwegs. Dort hat er den im Jahr 2010 wieder aktiv gewordenen Vulkan Eyjafjallajökull mit der Fotokamera beobachtet. Die Fotografien har er anschliessend in aufwändigem Verfahren in der Serie Primal Force, 2011 druckgrafisch umgesetzt.

Cristina Fessler reiste regelmässig nach Indien. Seit 2001 ist die umfangreiche Bilderserie Tree mit den vorbereitenden Studien auf Kupferplatten entstanden, angeregt durch die üppige Vegetation Südindiens. Dieser Werkblock ist zum Vermächtnis der Künstlerin geworden.

Brigitte Fries ist an der Peripherie von Zürich zu Fuss unterwegs. An der Nahtstelle zwischen Grossstadt und Agglomeration hat sie Naturlandschaften entdeckt, die zum Ausgangspunkt für ihre formal höchst reduzierten Arbeiten werden, wie die im Tuschefluss gezeichneten Horizontlinien.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert ausgewählte Arbeiten aus den oben erwähnten Werkzyklen der drei Kunstschaffenden.
Three generations, two Swiss artists, a Finnish artist and a shared topic. The long-term und continued investigation into the motive of landscape characterizes the work of Cristina Fessler (1944-2012), Brigitte Fries (geb. 1955) and Janne Laine (geb. 1970). In the process of creative adaptation the three artists have each developed a distinctive form of pictorial interpretation that leads beyond representation. Through formal reduction and by suspension of point of view and proportion their works touch upon the question of beginning and end - of transcendence. For their research into imagery, Fessler, Fries and Laine have each found a landscape to which they keep respectively kept returning to.
Janne Laine is in Iceland en route. There he observed through the lens of his camera the volcano Eyjafjallajökull which became active again in 2010. Following this expedition he transformed the photographs during a complex printing procedure into the series Primal Force, 2011.

Cristina Fessler regularly travelled to India. Since 2001 she has been working on the series Trees, which she developed in preparatory studies on copper plates, It was the luxuriant vegetation of South India that has inspired a great number of paintings. This body of works has now turned into the artist's legacy.

Brigitte Fries is regularly walking in the outskirts of Zürich. On the edges of the city and suburb she has discovered natural landscapes which became the point of departure for her formally extremely reduced drawings such as the Horizontlinien she drew in ink flow.
